Ode to Refraction - BFA Capstone Project

This solo work was created for my BFA Capstone project, and is based on the research I compiled while writing an honors thesis for my English degree. My thesis centered around the concepts of ecstatic vision and mythology of self within the work of two pivotal twentieth-century female artists.
Modern dancer Isadora Duncan and writer H.D. (Hilda Doolittle) served as the pillars of my research; I explored not only their portfolios and the overlap between them, but also their artistic processes, the sources of their inspiration, and the continuing impact they have had on the arts. This capstone work serves as a physical embodiment of all that I learned while delving into the lives of these two women.
In addition to the choreographic element of this project I also gathered images and videos from both research and my own lived experience, ultimately creating a video compilation that was projected during my piece. The projection also featured an original poem I wrote and recited live; the spoken word element began my piece before any movement was introduced into the space.
